Amateurs: outdoor magazine printed with 3 cover versions
Amateurs describes itself as “a symptom of time spent outdoors, usually presenting as a magazine.” It’s a yearly publication focusing on all things outdoors, combining art photography with articles on everything from trail running to tent-based modern art.
For their third issue, Amateurs wanted to have a choice of three covers, celebrating climbing, running and surfing.
All three were printed on Soperset Offset stock. A Sandgrain laminate was then applied, giving the covers a rougher feel that captures the spirit of life outdoors – and makes them more durable, so you can read them anywhere.
As is common with environmentally-conscious publications, the publishers wanted an uncoated stock for the majority of the text pages. Munken Lynx Rough was chosen for its rougher, tactile feel in keeping with the issue’s cover.
But with articles dedicated to travel, art and extreme sports, Amateurs features a lot of striking imagery, full page photography was printed on Essential Gloss, a smooth gloss paper that’s great at capturing sharp detail.
